A man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death with a kitchen knife and wounded a Good Samaritan who came to her aid has been jailed for a minimum of 31 years.

Jason Cooper, 26, murdered his former partner Laura Stuart, 33, and injured David Roberts in August last year after sending a text saying his former partner should run because he was going to kill her.

Mr Justice Simon Picken, handing the killer a life sentence at Mold Crown Court in north Wales today, said Cooper could not bear the thought of Laura Stuart carrying on with her life and being happy with someone else.

Cooper stabbed his ex-girlfriend twice in the back and head, and then kicked her to the face with considerable force, described by Mr Roberts' father Gareth Roberts as akin to a penalty kick taken by a Premier League footballer, the court heard.

Weeks - Jury - Hour - Murder - Mr

Two weeks ago a jury took less than an hour to find him guilty of her murder and wounding Mr Roberts with intent.

The couple had split up six weeks before Cooper stabbed Ms Stuart in the early hours of August 12 last year, the court heard.

Kitchen - Knife - Shoulder - Height - Prosecutors

He rushed at her carrying a kitchen knife at shoulder height and stabbed her, prosecutors said.

Mr Roberts tried to protect her but was stabbed to the shoulder, elbow and ear, Mr Justice Picken said.

'He survived the attack but she did not and sadly died the next day,' the judge said.

The fatal wound was a five-inch wound to the chest which caused catastrophic internal bleeding and cardiac arrest, the court heard.

Defendant - Land - Responsibility - Basis - Alcohol

The defendant had denied intending to kill land put forward diminished responsibility on the basis of an alcohol dependency syndrome.

Mr Justice Picken told Cooper that he had done what he had threatened to do, to kill or erase Laura.
