A California rancher has been arrested after police raids at his properties uncovered hundreds of dead cows, some of which had been heaped into pile 10 feet high.

Raymond Frank Christie was charged with animal cruelty on Monday after a five month investigation led authorities to the malnourished and dead livestock strewn across the rancher's four properties.

Humboldt - County - Sheriff - Office - Cattle

The Humboldt County sheriff's office found roughly 250 to 300 dead cattle on Christie's ranch located in Arcata.

Christie had heaped some of them into large piles about 10 feet high near an excavator, while others were found laying in or near waterways.

Much of the cattle that was still alive was found to be malnourished and a large number had been confined to small areas.
