From seitan 'chicken' to substitute cheese, vegan-friendly recipes are on the rise - and the latest offering of aubergine bacon is already raising eyebrows.

Meat-lovers have widely mocked the recipe, which was posted on food site Delish and tells cooks how they can replicate bacon with the purple fruit.

Recipe - 'I - Bacon - Time

One claimed the recipe 'should be illegal' while another fumed: 'I just saw a "how to" on how to make eggplant "bacon". This may be the first time I've ever been offended.'

Vegetarians and vegans alike shared in their excitement about making the dish.

Recipe - Syrup - Soy - Sauce - Flavour

The experimental recipe is made by mixing maple syrup, soy sauce, paprika and the main flavour - liquid smoke.

Delish dubiously claims liquid smoke is 'readily available' at your local supermarket, however...
