We’ve heard all about the sonic attacks perpetrated upon U.S. and Canadian diplomats in Havana, allegedly by the Cuban government. Now, we can finally hear the same things that the diplomats themselves heard — and it’s every bit as disturbing as you might imagine.
The recording, obtained by The Associated Press and released to the public Thursday, is a five-second sample of what sounds like a kind of cricket that has somehow learned to mimic the tones of human fingernails on a chalkboard. And keep in mind, this is just from what the weapon produces on the audible spectrum; experts have speculated that an infrasound or ultrasound element might be responsible for some of the effects being experienced.

Unlike the sonic weapon that investigators believe some actor or faction within the communist state used against our diplomats, listening to the recording of it doesn’t put anyone in danger of the physical side effects diplomats experienced. Those effects include visual disturbances, lack of sleep, cognitive issues and balance problems, inter alia. Fox News reports 22 U.S. Embassy workers have been injured in the attacks since last year, and CBS News says some of victims have been injured seriously enough to have mild traumatic brain injury or central nervous system damage.
Even though it’s being played at a much lower volume than diplomats say they experienced it at, you can see why the noise has caused so many issues:

While the AP conceded not everyone in Cuba heard the exact same noise from the alleged suspected weapon, the news organization “has reviewed several recordings from Havana taken under different circumstances, and all have variations of the same high-pitched sound.” In addition, several individuals who have been subjected to the noise confirmed that the recording was what they had heard.
