Years before former Ronald Reagan ran for any public office, he recorded a short, prescient warning against the rise of socialized medicine — and were he alive today, I suspect he’d repeat these exact same words to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

A self-avowed socialist, Sanders recently proposed a “Medicare for All” bill that would force the government to use taxpayer money to fund the health care of every single American, from the fat cats on Wall Street to the drunks of Bourbon Street.

Reagan - Proposals - Nothing - Recipes - Socialism

But as Reagan noted in 1961, proposals such as these are nothing but recipes for full-blown socialism.

“One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine,” he said, according to a transcript from the Chicago Tribune. “It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project. Most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can’t afford it.”

Decades - Introduction - Affordable - Care - Act

Though he spoke decades before the introduction of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 by then-President Barack Hussein Obama, Reagan already had a strong inkling of what might happen were even the most benign-looking socialist policy to become law.

And now, seven years after the signing of Obamacare into law, a Democrat politician seeks to upgrade the nation’s already troubled health care system into a full-fledged socialist one.

Quoting a statement made by James Madison in 1788, Reagan said, “Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.'”
