Spotify-Hulu partnership targets college students

Spotify and Hulu have teamed up to offer a new bundle deal that includes Spotify’s premium ad-free tier and Hulu’s tier with limited commercials.

The bundle is available for $4.99 per month to US undergraduate students at an accredited college or university. The bundle represents a $13 discount, and the two companies plan to split the subscription fee, according to Bloomberg.

The new bundle deal could indicate a future of subscription services partnering with each other to have a broader appeal. More companies in different market segments will likely fill the gaps in their offerings by merging together or selling through each other’s respective distribution channels to take a larger piece of the available market share, Fosina Marketing Group CEO Jim Fosina told BI Intelligence.

The partnership reflects the increasingly competitive on-demand video and music streaming service market. Music streaming services like Apple Music look to continually build out music catalogs, while video streaming services like Netflix are increasing original content production.
