While many of us have been sweating on a treadmill trying to attain the elusive 'bikini body', a Bondi Beach Personal Trainer has revealed that's not the way to go at all.

Dylan Rivier told FEMAIL that women looking for defined limbs and taut torsos should be lifting heavy weights as well as - if not more than - their cardio training.

He said building muscle keeps the calories burning for longer, allowing you to drop weight faster and achieve the in-vogue fit physique of your dreams.

'One of the biggest misconceptions is the old school way of thinking, that girls shouldn't be lifting heavy weights or they will become bulky,' Mr Rivier told Daily Mail Australia.

'To get bulky, you've got to be training at least six times a week and eating a truck load.'

He said despite many people still believing just lifting weights will leave them looking like a human Hulk, perceptions are beginning to change.

'People have really cottoned on to the importance of strength training - all the models and celebrities are doing it - the squats and the deadlifts,' he said.
