Pillowcase 'Rapist', 60, shouts that he's not guilty during first appearance in court

A registered sex offender accused of being the 'Pillowcase Rapist' has blurted out 'I’m not guilty' during his first court appearance.

Robert Eugene Koehler, 60, was arrested on Saturday in Palm Bay, and is suspected of being the killer in a high-profile case where the suspect used bedding to hide his face before raping more than 40 women in Florida in the 1980s.

Koehler - Battery - Conviction - Palm - Beach

Koehler - who already has a sexual battery conviction from 1991 in Palm Beach County - is currently being held in Brevard County Jail until he's transferred to Miami, and his comment to a judge via video link was not an official plea.

He appeared in the jail's courtroom wearing a green smock usually given to high-profile suspects, dubbed a 'suicide gown'.

Koehler - Flops - Ankles - Paperwork

Koehler also wore flip flops and had his ankles chained as he appeared to sign paperwork.

If Miami authorities to not collect him by Thursday, he will have to appear in front a Brevard County judge again.

Arrest - Number - Cases - Years - Thanks

It is not known exactly what led to his arrest but a number of cold cases have been solved in recent years thanks to a breakthrough in DNA testing and genealogical data stored on ancestry websites.

A detective with the Miami-Dade Police Department said: 'We will be having a conference call with the State Attorney’s Office to determine the next step.

Detective - Argemis - Colome - Information - Warrant

The detective, Argemis Colome, said they were working to release more information about the warrant leading to Koehler's arrest.

Colome added: 'We’re getting calls as you can imagine from everywhere. He’s been arrested, but we have nothing else on the case at this time.'

One man who said he got to known Koehler after he moved to Palm Beach in 2008, said the suspect was an electrician who traveled for work.

'He was raising his daughter and son. He had various girlfriends....
