BETELGEUSE! BETELGEUSE! BETELGEUSE!— Sarafina Nance (@starstrickenSF) December 23, 2019
a massive red supergiant in the constellation Orion, it's ~200 parsecs away & has fascinated humans for centuries with its signature bright red color and gargantuan size.
the biggest question now is when it will explode as a supernova.
for catching!— Sarafina Nance (@starstrickenSF) December 23, 2019
*correction* sleep deprived me misread how big the connective cells are. they’re not 0.6x the radius of the sun, they’re 0.6x the radius of the STAR!!! that puts the convective cells of Betelgeuse at ~480x the radius of the Sun. THEY’RE HUGE!!! thanks @Astro_MiguelM
