Worried That French Jihadists Will Return From Syria, France Tightens Security at Home

Paris (CNSNews.com) – French President Emmanuel Macron has raised concerns that Turkey’s military offensive in northeastern Syria may help revive the campaign of ISIS in the region, following reports of captured ISIS fighters escaping from custody amid the fighting.

France, like other countries in the E.U., is worried that escaped or released jihadists will return to Europe.

After Macron met with military and security advisors late on Sunday, his office said in a statement that “measures” were being put in place “to strengthen the security of the national territory.”

Apart from tightening border controls, no further details were given. Those attending the meeting included the chief of staff of France’s armed forces, the prime minister, and the defense, justice, interior and foreign affairs ministers.

The statement also said that steps would be taken “in the coming hours to ensure the safety of French military and civilian personnel” who are in the conflict zone as part of the anti-ISIS coalition or involved in humanitarian operations.

France by custom does not comment on the presence, location or operations of its Special Forces but is believed to have several hundred troops in the region, collaborating with Kurdish groups.

Authorities in the autonomous Kurdish zone – the target of the Turkish offensive – announced on Sunday that 785 ISIS family members had escaped from a camp in Ain Issa, which is home to 13,000 displaced people.

The Kurdish fighters who have been responsible for guarding the ISIS captives and their families are unable or unwilling to do so any longer, as they face the Turkish offensive. There have also been reports that Turkey’s Syrian proxies in the offensive, some of whom have extremist links, are freeing ISIS prisoners.
