Football Manager claims to be rolling out the gaming industry's first environmentally friendly packaging using recycled cardboard and vegetable-based ink.

Arsenal star Héctor Bellerín teamed up with Sports Interactive this week to announce that the 2020 edition of the club simulation game will be scrapping its plastic case.

And in an open letter, the company's studio director Miles Jacobson 'threw down the gauntlet' for all entertainment brands to follow their lead and ditch plastic.

Sports Interactive often uses its Football Manager product as a vehicle to tap into wider real-life discourse.

In the past, the simulation has forced gamers to navigate Brexit fallout and deal with footballers coming out as gay.

After admitting that the game needs to be more ecologically aware, Mr Jacobson wrote: 'I'm very proud to announce that packaging for the standard edition of Football Manager 2020 will be what we believe to be a first for the industry – it's the most environmentally friendly packaging we've been able to put together.
