Iran sends a destroyer to the Gulf 'to provide security' amid heightened tensions with the US

Iran has sent a destroyer to the Gulf to help safeguard the country's ships, amid heightened tensions with the United States.

A helicopter-carrying support ship Kharg and destroyer Sahand were dispatched to the Gulf of Aden, reports Anadolu Agency.

Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the Sahand will 'provide security for Islamic Republic vessels in international waters.'

He said the vessel will safeguard Iranian shipping in the Sea of Oman and the Gulf of Aden. The contested Strait of Hormuz is very close to the Gulf of Oman.

Piracy - Concern - Gulf - Aden - Arabian

While piracy is a major concern in the Gulf of Aden, located between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa, and ships must pass through it when transiting the Suez Canal.

Iranian state TV said today that the Sahand, built in 2012, carries surface to surface missiles, air defense systems and torpedoes, while the Kharg has a helicopter pad and serves in a logistical role.
