Runner who 'won' Boston Marathon in 1980 but was stripped of her title for cheating dies age 66

Rosie Ruiz, who was stripped of her Boston Marathon title after being accused of cheating the race, died on July 8. She was 66 years old.

According to the Cuban-born runner's obituary, she passed away last month after a 10-year battle with cancer.

Ruiz was 27 years old when she won the Boston Marathon in 1980. That same year she was accused of cheating to win the race.

She had been living in New York at the time and had previously run in the 1979 New York City Marathon.

Ruis was stripped of her victory eight days after being credited with a 2:31:56 finish - the third fastest time in women’s history.

Officials accused her of jumping into the 26.2-mile race a couple of miles before the finish.

Spectators also claimed at the time that they hadn't seen her during the first 25 miles of the race.

After it was revealed that her time was a 25-minute improvement upon her time at the New York City Marathon six months earlier, suspicions began to grow about the validity of her title.

A pair of Harvard students later claimed to see Ruiz running through a crowd of spectators on Commonwealth Avenue, re-joining the race a half mile from the finish.

Ruiz was later retroactively disqualified from both the Boston Marathon and the previous New York City Marathon.

The runner was a Manhattan officer worker in 1979 when she decided to run the New York Marathon, according to a 1993 Associated Press article.

At the time, she sent in her application too late but 'received special dispensation after claiming she was dying of brain cancer'.

Scandal - Ruiz - New - York - Richard

Following the scandal, Ruiz returned to New York and worked for Richard Stephens Inc, a real estate agency.

She was later charged with stealing $60,000 from the firm, according to the AP...
