More than 50 firefighters battle blaze at Holiday Inn hotel

A Holiday Inn has been destroyed by a huge blaze which started in the sauna and sent up huge plumes of black smoke.

Locals in Walsall have been urged to shut their windows and doors after the two-storey building on Wolverhampton Road was ravaged by flames.

More than 50 firefighters raced to the scene near the M6 at around 4pm today to tackle the inferno, which was described as 'severe'.

It is believed the blaze started in the sauna on the ground floor, before spreading throughout the hotel.

Shocking photos show the roof collapsed and flickering flames from the smashed windows of the gutted rooms.

Meanwhile, footage shows huge plumes of smoke billowing from the the charred building and shrouding the nearby roads.

No one was injured during the blaze, and guests were taken to a nearby hotel.

Motorist were held up in long traffic jams after the blaze broke out, as fire crews on hydraulic platforms tried to douse the flames.

Traffic experts warned rush hour motorists to expect long delays as they were held up in tailbacks while the fire was tackled.

West Midland Police are now said to be overseeing road closures close to the site, according to the BBC.
