Beauty queen, 20, hits back after being stripped of Miss Michigan title over 'offensive' tweets

A conservative Michigan woman claims she was dismissed from the Miss World America pageant because her tweets about black-on-black gun violence and refusing to try on a hijab were deemed 'offensive, insensitive and inappropriate.'

Political commentator Kathy Zhu, 20, revealed Thursday that she had received an email from Miss World American pageant organizers informing her that she had been dumped from the contest, in which she had been crowned Miss Michigan, due to her social media content.

In the email, which Zhu tweeted, the University of Michigan student was supposedly told that her 'social media accounts contain offensive, insensitive and inappropriate content' and were 'in violation of MWA's Rules and Conditions, specifically the contest requirement of "being of good character and whose background is not likely to bring into disrepute Miss World America."'

She was also instructed to remove any mentions or pictures of herself representing Miss World America.

Zhu tweeted that 'Miss World America's State/National/Chief Director accused me of being racist, Islamaphobic, and insensitive. They stripped me of my Miss Michigan title due to my refusal to try on a hijab in 2018, my tweet about black on black gun violence, and "insensitive" statistical tweets.'

'I have seen this happen before,' Zhu, a Donald Trump fan, told the Detroit Free Press on Thursday, adding that 'It is just not okay to be prejudiced against people who just have a different political view as you.'

The first tweet that Zhu believes led to her being dropped from the pageant was from 2018, when Zhu was a student at University of Central Florida. On the campus' World Hijab Day, she said that she opted not to try on a hijab when the offer was made.
