1. Many people are convinced that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin never walked on the moon and that the Apollo 11 landings were faked in a Hollywood studio.

Many websites are dedicated to exposing what they see as a fraud. The evidence they present is compelling, starting with the fact that as Armstrong steps from the landing craft, it is just possible to spot that he is wearing Hush Puppy loafers, which were popular at the time, but quite unsuitable for moonwalks.

Conspiracy theorists argue that he had borrowed them off popular actor Dick Van Dyke, who was filming an edition of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in a neighbouring studio at the same time.

2. Many moonwalk deniers believe that film director Stanley Kubrick was secretly employed to mastermind the staging, but others believe the job was given to Walt Disney.

'If you look really hard, just over Buzz Aldrin's left shoulder you can see seven dwarfs larking around,' reports one website.

'And for a split second you can see a dalmatian next to astronaut Michael Collins in the cockpit.'

3. The food aboard the Apollo space flight had to be lightweight and compact, as the in-flight kitchen was extremely rudimentary.

Chief cook Buzz Aldrin made three attempts at pancakes, but found that, when tossed, they all stuck to the ceiling, leaving behind what he described as a 'gooey mess'.

'Until we were first strapped into our seats, I had been expecting a stewardess to be on board, as part of our on-board crew,' reminisced Collins. 'So it came as a shock to discover we would have to fend for ourselves.'

Unskilled at cooking, he tried to live on toast, but gravity made the task difficult, as each slice popped out of the Apollo toaster and then failed to land.
