A Virginia school district has approved a gender-neutral dress code to prevent singling out females when it come to what is appropriate for them to wear in the classroom.
On Thursday, the Roanoke County School Board in Roanoke, Virginia, voted unanimously to alter the code so it would hold male and female students accountable for the same standards of dress.

When speaking to Today, chairman of the Roanoke County School Board Don Butzer said the goal for the new dress code was to be fair to both genders.
'The old dress codes we had and that many schools have today single out girls for bra straps and undergarments and many things girls wear,' Butzer told the publication.

Dress codes across the United States tend to single out female students about what they wear to school, citing them for broken rules related to bra straps or short skirts.
But the new code in Roanoke, which was supported by 60 per cent of parents, aimed to alter the wording to best apply to both genders.

'The new policy is probably the most progressive in Virginia,' he said. 'Our goal was to make it as simple as possible.'
The school district narrowed the dress code down to be five pages long with diagrams of what was appropriate for the students to wear.
