Ivanka comes out swinging against anti-vaxxers as she urges measles shots for kids

Ivanka Trump came out against the anti-vaccination movement on Friday when she urged people to get their children the measles shot.

'Parents and guardians, the importance of vaccinating your children cannot be overestimated,' she wrote on Twitter.

She added a siren emoji to her post and pointed to a Wall Street Journal article on how U.S. measles cases have hit their highest level in more than 25 years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the new numbers on Friday.

There have been 971 cases of measles reported in the US so far this year, which means more people have caught the disease in the last five months than in any entire calendar year since 1992, which saw 963 reported cases.

Officials said if the number of cases continues at its current trend, the U.S. will lose its designation as a country that has eliminated measles.

'Measles is incredibly contagious,' CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said in a statement. 'We need to act together now to stop this outbreak before there are even more serious consequences.'

Most of the measles cases this year are connected to two outbreaks in New York: in New York City and Rockland County, where the highly contagious disease is spreading among unvaccinated children in ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities.
