The mother of former NSA contractor Reality Winner, who was convicted of leaking classified documents to a news website, has spoken out to claim her daughter is being kept under media blackout by the prison system.
'The prosecution painted her to be a very evil person, who hates her country,' mother Billie Winner-Davis said in an interview with CNN published on Wednesday.

'They don't want the world to be exposed to the real Reality Winner,' the mother said.
Winner, 27, pleaded guilty last year to a single count of transmitting national security information for printing out a classified report at a NSA office in Augusta, Georgia where she worked as a contractor and tucking it into her pantyhose.

The document, a description of Russian attempts to hack into U.S. voting software, was leaked to The Intercept. Winner was sentenced to five years in prison.
Winner referred to President Donald Trump as an 'orange fascist' in a tweet, and wrote in a diary 'I want to burn the White House down,' according to prosecutors.

She also expressed admiration for the Taliban in the diary, prosecutors said.
CNN revealed on Wednesday that it has been desperately seeking to interview Winner behind bars.

A CNN crew went so far as to take a seven-hour road trip with Winner's mother on a visit with her daughter at FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas.
The network's camera crew was rebuffed at the prison gates, however, and the warden has denied CNN's repeated pleas for an interview with Winner.

Mother Winner-Davis told the network that she believes the Bureau of Prisons is 'afraid' of Americans getting 'to know who Reality Winner really is'.
