Britain's most senior soldier in the military has waded into the row over the witch-hunt of veterans by saying troops deserved protection from ‘harassment’.
In an unprecedented intervention, Warrant Officer Class One Glenn Haughton said soldiers wanted to defend their nation ‘without fear of potential investigations in the years that follow’.

He said that it ‘mattered profoundly’ that they were given government support when they went into battle.
Sgt Maj Haughton, the most senior non-officer across defence, made the comments in a speech at the Royal United Service’s Institute (Rusi).
