School district tries to fire tenured teacher 'who uttered racial slur to seventh grade students'

A New Jersey school district has filed paperwork to remove a tenured teacher who allegedly uttered a racial slur to seventh grade students.

The Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District brought tenure charges against Bruce Bassetti, a science teacher who taught at Penns Grove Middle School.

The district alleges that on February 27, Bassetti was teaching a seventh-grade science class.

Four students who were in the classroom complained to the assistant principal, according to NJ Advance Media.

After speaking to the students, the assistant principal and the principal met with Bassetti to discuss the incident.

During the meeting, Bassetti allegedly asked who the students were that were accusing him.

Bassetti was apparently referencing one of the complaining students.

Bassetti was then asked to write a statement.

Bassetti said he did not respond to the comment.

The day after the interview, Bassetti was suspended with pay pending the results of an investigation.
