Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will share the largest private donation supporting research into marijuana and its effects on the human brain.

The $9 million gift, thought to be the largest donation of its kind from a man called Charles Broderick, will be split evenly between researchers at Harvard Medical School and the School of Science at MIT.

Broderick, an alumnus of both universities, has invested in several large North American marijuana companies and said he hopes to fill the 'research void' in the science of cannabis.

Broderick claimed the universities and the researchers said he will have no say in the work process or its results. The findings will also be published even if they find marijuana doesn’t help or causes harm.

Broderick - Time - Idea - Research - Harvard

Broderick recalled the first time he raised the idea of funding cannabis research with a Harvard development officer. He told The Boston Globe: 'There was silence on the other end. Then she said: "I don’t think we do it." And I said that’s the problem.'
