Madonna admits she made new album Madame X because she 'had no friends and was depressed'

Madonna has revealed that boredom and depression led her to make new record, Madame X.

The superstar songstress, 60, unveiled her latest music video Medellín on Wednesday night in London, and explained that the inspiration behind her forthcoming 14th studio album happened after she relocated to Lisbon, Portugal.

'I - Lisbon - Record - Thing - Mind

'I didn't go to Lisbon to make a record, that was the last thing on my mind,' she told Trevor Nelson on MTV. 'I went to Lisbon because my son wants to be a professional soccer player and he wasn't going to have the highest level of training in America.'

'So I went to Lisbon to be a soccer mom. That's the last thing you'd expect from a controversial gal like myself.

'I thought it was going to be super fun and adventurous but then I found myself just going to school and picking up kids and going to soccer matches and really being Netty No Mates, and I got a little bit depressed.

'So I thought I've got to make friends and meet people.'

The singer went on to explain how this led to creating new music.

'Most of the people I met were artists - either painters or musicians. And I started getting invited to people's homes and they had things called Living Room Sessions.

'And people would bring wine and food and sit around a table. Suddenly musicians would get up and play instruments. And I was like "wait what's going on here..."'

The pop starlet explained what the title of the album is a reference to, and how the record 'goes back to her roots'.
