A Maryland police officer has been cleared for fatally shooting an unarmed black during a heated exchange last year, after the department concluded his actions were both ‘lawful and justified’.
Officer Anand Badgujar, 33, had already been ruled out of facing any criminal charges by state prosecutors before the Montgomery County Police Department’s announcement on Wednesday.

The department says its administrative investigation of the fatal June 2018 shooting of Robert White, a 41-year-old black man, found that the officer's use of deadly force was circumstantially justified by law.
The footage shows White pushing the policeman to ground at the end of the encounter, where investigators say White posed a real threat to steal Badgujar’s gun and shoot him.

White never brandished a weapon at Badgujar, but police say they later found a folding knife in his right front pocket.
Maryland authorities released the clip in July, showing Badgujar running through a neighborhood in Silver Spring on June 11, after spotting White acting suspiciously.

During his pursuit, Badgujar is heard shouting to White: 'Hey, big man, you need to stop'.
After an initial confrontation, Badgujar told a dispatcher: 'He's got his hands in his pocket. Might be a suicide-by-cop type thing'.
