Leonardo DiCaprio is awarded $18.5 million in tax credits to film his live-action version

It's the project that's been in the works for over 10 years, and now Leonardo DiCaprio's live-action Akira is finally getting the go-ahead.

It was revealed on Tuesday that the 44-year-old actor's film has received $18.5 million in tax credits under the California Film Commission's Film & TV Tax Credit Program 2.0.

The project is among 18 other films that have been selected to receive the tax benefits as part of the condition that its entirety is filmed in California.

The movie will be produced by Leonardo's Appian Way Productions that he founded in 2004 alongside Andrew Lazar.

Thor - Ragnarok - Taika - Waititi - Project

Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi is set to direct the project that will film in California over the course of 71 days despite being set in Tokyo in the year 2060.

'We are thrilled with the opportunity to shoot Akira in California,' said Ravi Mehta, Warner Bros Pictures EVP of physical production and finance, in a statement on Tuesday.
