Dragons Will Reign at the Box Office Again as Tyler Perry Bids Farewell to 'Madea'
After last weekend saw a franchise record debut for Universal and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, this weekend serves as something of the calm before the storm that will be Captain Marvel, which the industry is counting on to give the 2019 box office the jolt it sorely needs. As for this weekend, Hidden World will remain at #1, hoping to hold on more like the first film in the franchise than the second, while Lionsgate debuts Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral and Focus will release the thriller Greta. Additionally, this past weekend's Oscar winners find themselves expanding back into theaters, led by Best Picture winner Green Book.
Debut - Weekend - Universal - Release - DreamWorks
Following a better-than-expected debut last weekend, Universal's release of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 3 will remain the top film at the weekend box office this weekend, the question is whether it delivers a performance more like the first film, which dipped just -33.7% in its second weekend, or more like the second, which fell -50% in its sophomore frame. Based on the film's debut performance we're looking for a second weekend somewhere in the middle, anticipating a dip around -42% and a $32 million second weekend, pushing the film's cume right to the edge of, if not over, $100 million after ten days in release.
Looking at a second place finish is Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral, which the multi-hyphenate has suggested will serve as the final Madea feature. Family Funeral is the ninth Madea film so far and all but one — A Madea Christmas — has opened with over $20 million and there doesn't seem to be any reason to expect anything less from this latest release.
