As Democrats have launched “their most aggressive push to enact gun-control laws after years of congressional inaction,” according to the Washington Post, former astronaut-turned-gun-control advocate Mark Kelly has launched a campaign for the Democrat nomination for U.SA. Senator from Arizona.

Kelly, husband of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an attempted assassination in Tucson several years ago and is now also campaigning for stricter gun laws, raised more than $1 million already, according to Bloomberg News.

Bloomberg - Headline - Party - Story - Kelly

Bloomberg reported in its headline that “the party has recruited…Kelly.” The story says Kelly is “widely considered the best possible choice to run against the incumbent senator, Martha McSally, a Republican.”

Wednesday - House - Judiciary - Committee - Bill

On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee passed a bill to require so-called “universal background checks” on firearms transfers. The vote was 21-14.

In a separate vote, the committee passed a measure 23-15 that would prevent gun purchases after a three-day delay on a background check that is not completed within that 72-hour timeframe.

Kelly - Wife - Giffords - Gun - Control

Kelly and his wife have founded “Giffords,” a gun control lobbying organization that began life as Americans for Responsible Solutions. They have traveled around the country, testifying before various legislatures and appearing at speaking engagements to push gun control.

All this comes as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested that a future Democrat president could declare a national emergency and enact stricter regulations on guns in the same way that President Donald Trump declared an emergency Friday to secure funds for his border wall. Her remark has been widely considered a threat against the Second Amendment, and it has infuriated gun owners and rights activists.
