NASA has been working to regain contact with the Opportunity rover—which outlasted its planned mission on Mars by more than 14 years—ever since a catastrophic dust storm struck and blocked its solar panels in June. But on Tuesday, the mission team at JPL sent out their last signals to the robot. Martian winter is fast-approaching, bringing with it low temperatures that Opportunity simply cannot survive if its batteries aren't charged up to power its heating systems.
