Google AI beats professional players at StarCraft II

Google's artificial intelligence (AI) software, known as AlphaZero, has defeated two of the world's top players of the popular game Starcraft II.

The real-time strategy video game StarCraft II involves making complex decisions based on previous in-game moves.

The AI is the work of Google's DeepMind division and is the latest in a series of incredible AI achievements by the firm.

StarCraft II pitches players with rival forces against each other in a battle to gather resources, build up a base, create an army and conquer an arena.

Map - Combatants - Instinct - Intuition - Foes

Much of the map remains obscured, so combatants have to rely on instinct and intuition to best their foes.

This makes it much harder to program a computer to win than other games of strategy with fixed variables.

DeepMind - Version - AI - AlphaStar - Footage

DeepMind trained five version of its AI, called AlphaStar, on footage of human players competing.

They were then set loose on each other to compete within a league. The winning AI gathered the equivalent of 200 years of gaming.

AlphaStar - Knowledge - Dario - Wunsch - Player

AlphaStar used this knowledge to beat Dario Wunsch, 44th best player in the world, and Grzegorz Komincz, 13th.
