Serena Williams fans have claimed she was robbed of Australian Open victory after an umpire called a controversial foot fault on match point.

Serving for a quarter-final win against Czech star Karolina Pliskova at 5-1, 40-30, Williams appeared to hit an ace but was called for a foot fault.

World - Number - Serve - Ankle - Forehand

The former world number one didn't protest and served her second serve, only to twist her left ankle and dump a forehand into the net.

After the point, she grabbed her foot in pain before going on to lose that game. The 37-year-old didn't win another game and lost the final set 7-5.

Former US open finalist Pam Shriver tweeted: 'You could not imagine or script how the last two majors have ended for Serena!

Fan - Dan - Leach - Serena - Match

Fan Dan Leach tweeted: 'Can't believe that Serena lost that match... That foot fault on match point will be remembered forever.'

Another fan, George Johnson, added: 'A foot fault called on Serena on match point... Always so bull.'

Match - Points - Pliskova - Czech - Star

Three more match points would follow while Pliskova served, and the Czech star saved each one.

After the match, Williams did not blame the umpire or her...
