White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders is under fire for saying Martin Luther King Jr 'gave his life' to fight racism, when he was actually murdered.

'Today we honor a great American who gave his life to right the wrong of racial inequality,' Sanders tweeted Monday as a tribute to the late activist on MLK Day. 'Our country is better thanks to his inspiration and sacrifice #MLKDay.'

What was meant to be a thoughtful tribute, quickly backfired for Sanders, as Twitter users pointed out that Dr Martin Luther King Jr did not voluntarily give his life, but was gunned down outside of a hotel by James Earl Ray in 1968.

'Apparently, MLK volunteered to be murdered,' Cory Provost, a district leader for New York's 58th Assembly District, wrote.

Many enraged Twitter users used Dr King's message as a rebuke of all things Donald Trump, with some saying the late activist would be 'appalled' by today's political climate.

Actress Mia Farrow chimed in to respond to Sanders and bash the president.
