An Idaho teacher accused of feeding a sick puppy to a snapping turtle in front of several students went on trial yesterday.
Preston Junior High School science teacher Robert Crosland was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty in June and a six-person jury will decide if he's guilty.

As of 11 am local time yesterday, jury selection was underway at the Franklin County Courthouse.
He faces up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine if convicted for allegedly feeding a puppy to a snapping turtle.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge in September.
Superintendent for Preston schools, Marc Gee said in a news release that his administration became aware of 'a regrettable circumstance involving some of the biological specimens' on March 7.

'The event occurred well after students had been dismissed and was not a part of any school-directed program,' Gee said. 'We emphasize that at no time was the safety of students or staff compromised.'
Although it happened after most students had left the classroom, some were still there when Crosland allegedly committed the act.
