A newborn baby has been named after the two police officers who got his mother to the hospital safely - with just minutes to spare.

PCs James Ireland and Daniel Bellingham blue lighted the heavily pregnant woman to hospital after a desperate father-to-be flagged them down.

The PCs, serving with Essex Police Roads Unit, were patrolling on the crowded A12 just before Christmas when they got caught up in rush hour traffic.

Fighting their way to Chelmsford as many road users do every day, they saw a man waving for them to stop further ahead.

He shouted that his wife was in the final stages of labour but his car was marooned in the traffic jams and he feared they would not make it to hospital in time.

The cops ordered the couple into their patrol car and, with PC Ireland at the wheel, the flashing blue lights and sirens were switched on to clear traffic from their path.
