Former FBI Director James Comey told Republican lawmakers he dispatched two agents to interview Mike Flynn because he had told Vice President Mike Pence information that didn't square with classified information he had reviewed.

Comey sat down with Republican Oversight and Judiciary Committee members Monday for a sealed interview, only to come out afterward and bash Republicans for a 'shameful' attack on the Justice Department.

Behind closed doors, Republicans pressed him on the decision to interview Flynn, Trump's former national security advisor, as well as his account of a one-on-one conversation with Trump where Comey says the president asked him to let the Flynn matter go.

Their closed-door confrontation emerged just after a federal judge excoriated Flynn for having 'sold out your country' by lying to the FBI during his interview and for failing to disclose his work for a foreign power.

Comey said he sent agents to interview Flynn just days into his White House tenure 'to see if they could, by interviewing Mr. Flynn, gain an understanding about why the Vice President was making statements that purported to repeat statements he had made that were false.'

Oversight panel chair Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina asked Comey if he knew Pence's statements were false, and Comey answered 'Correct.' Pence was denying that anyone in the administration had discussed the removal of sanctions with Russia, something Flynn now admits occurred.

'It is not the FBI's job, unless I'm mistaken, to correct false statements that political figures say to one another. So why did you send two Bureau agents to interview Michael Flynn?' Gowdy pressed.

'Because one of the FBI's jobs is to understand the efforts of foreign adversaries to influence, coerce, corrupt the Government of the United States,' Comey responded.
