That’s how much Planned Parenthood received in US tax money last year.

Week - Government - Avoidance - Thereof—will - News

This week a government shut-down—or the last-second avoidance thereof—will dominate American news. One story missing will be the fight over federally funding our nation’s largest abortion provider. When the government is funded, either short-term or long-term, expect Planned Parenthood to be as well.

$550 million. They may even get a raise.

How did we get here?

Last month Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives in what political observers are calling “a blue wave,” thus ending eight years of Republican control of Congress. This impressive stretch was undoubtedly enabled by evangelicals who have voted Republican for their pro-life platform. Its not hard to see why. The Democratic Party platform proclaims that abortion “must be part of comprehensive health care and included as part of America’s global health programming.” The platform pledges to only support judges who “will keep abortion legal.”

On the other hand, the Republican platform pledges to “oppose abortion funding,” as well as an opposition to any health care plan that includes tax-payer funded abortion. Simply put, the Republican platform pledges to “oppose abortion.”

But now that Republicans hand control of the House back over to Democrats, evangelicals might want to ask what was accomplished in eight years of Republican control. While certainly the last two years have seen more pro-life judges confirmed, remember, that judges are confirmed by the Senate, while the House must pass spending bills. So, in the eight years that Republicans have controlled the House (and four years the Senate and House, and two years the Senate, House, and Presidency), what has happened to federal funds being directed to abortion?
