Emma Thompson responds to wearing TRAINERS to receive damehood

She was made a Dame during a prestigious investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace earlier this month.

And Emma Thompson has laughed off the backlash about her outfit choice to receive the honour, having broken with protocol to wear a pair of white trainers and a suit.

The 59-year-old star was quizzed about her quirky footwear during an appearance on the My Dad Wrote a Porno podcast, joking, 'They were posh trainers'.

More specifically, they were Stella McCartney's Stan Smith vegan style sneakers, retailing at £235 ($325) for a pair.

Emma recalled: 'I got into terrible trouble wearing jeans to Cannes once. I was wearing a very sparkly top look, if you’re wearing a sparkly top it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing underneath it.

Emma admitted she 'sniggered' with the Duke of Cambridge when he presented her with her damehood at Buckingham Palace earlier this month.

She said: 'I love Prince William, I’ve known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other.
