A group of inmates at Gwinnett County Jail have paid tribute to an officer who was fatally shot in the line of duty last month.

Officer Antwan Toney, 30, was days away from celebrating his third year with Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office in Georgia when he was fatally shot while responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle on October 20, and was struck by a bullet shot from inside the car.

Sheriff - Office - Letter - Facebook - Saturday

The Sheriff's Office shared the two-page letter on Facebook on Saturday, fittingly one day before Veteran's Day. The message was penned by 20 inmates who joined the community's chorus of appreciation for the fallen officer.

'On behalf of myself and a number of fellow prisoners who are currently serving time in the Gwinett County Detention center, I wish to extend condolences to Officer Toney's family and the GFSO Brotherhood as a whole,' the letter says.

'This - Incident - Law - Enforcement - Criminals

'This was a tragic incident that never should have occurred. And although law enforcement and criminals may be considered opposites, the intrinsic value of a human life transcends those boundaries by far. Right is right and wrong is wrong. No matter the color uniform.

'It is from this standpoint, in a spirit of gratitude and utmost respect that I submit this letter to honor all police officers, military personnel, and first responders. Your service and sacrifice make the world a better place for all. Thank you...,' the letter adds.
