Retailer pulls sexy Handmaid's Tale Halloween costume following backlash

Last year online retailer Yandy.com came under fire for its Native American line of Halloween costumes. This year, the site caused outrage with its sexy handmaid garb, an outfit women forced into surrogacy wear in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

The model on the site is seen wearing a long red cloak over a very short mini-dress paired with black heels, fishnet stockings and a white bonnet headpiece. The costume retails for $64.95.

Hulu - Series - Margaret - Atwood - Novel

In the Hulu series, based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, women are stripped of their rights as they are assigned various new roles by the men who govern them. A group of women, known as the Handmaids, are forced to have sex with their Commanders to have children for infertile women.

The women who are forced to be Handmaids are women who have committed gender and religious crimes, such as lesbianism and adultery. Elisabeth Moss’ character Offred is one of the Handmaid’s.

Garb - Symbol - Protest - Women - Oppression

The garb has since become a feminist symbol of protest against women’s oppression around the world, and social media users are not happy Yandy decided to sexualize the outfit.
