Joan Collins hits back at son's claims about her ex-husband

Dame Joan Collins has hit back at her son's claims about her ex-husband Anthony Newley.

Alexander Newley told a Sunday newspaper that one of his father’s films – Can Heironymous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness? – was 'a confession of paedophilia' and that his father considered innocence to be 'an aphrodisiac'.

But Dame Joan, 84, said the claim about her ex-husband was 'absolutely untrue'.

She told Good Morning Britain: 'I think that Sacha's being extremely naive and not really knowing the meaning of that word because what Tony admittedly was, is he loved young women and young women of 17, 18, 19 years old. Not children by any means.

'Never in a million years would I have been married to somebody like that.'

She added: 'Categorically, I can say that it is not true, that I never saw any of that kind of behaviour from Anthony.'

And she added of Newley, who died in 1999: 'I haven't been married to him for 40-something years.'

The couple's other child Tara Newley said she was shocked and 'deeply upset by these false allegations'.

Actor and singer Newley was a known womaniser but in an interview with the Sunday Times his son claimed: 'My father was drawn to youthfulness; he thought innocence was an aphrodisiac.

'That was his sexual proclivity and it's a very dangerous, destructive thing.'

Artist Mr Newley, 52, was speaking to the newspaper about his memoir, Unaccompanied Minor, in which he described his father as 'flagrantly unfaithful' and 'a sex addict'.

In the book, set to be published this week, he said: 'He [Anthony Newley] had been honest with my mother about his appetite for young girls, and said he would change, but she married him anyway.'
