No one would invite the apostle Paul to speak at a leadership summit. Our culture celebrates the strong, the persuasive, and the successful, so we’d struggle to listen to an unimpressive, suffering man who had been abandoned by many of his friends. Few leadership books list suffering like Paul’s as a prerequisite for effective leadership, but in From Weakness to Strength: 8 Vulnerabilities That Can Bring Out the Best in Your Leadership, Nashville pastor Scott Sauls shows leaders how God uses their difficulties to display his power.

Sauls uses Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12) to describe the struggles, obstacles, and challenges leaders face. Each chapter walks through one of eight common thorns—ambition, isolation, criticism, envy, insecurity, anticlimax, opposition, and suffering—to show how God showcases his grace through our weakness.
