Spiders - in all their eight-legged glory - often rate among the most common phobias, leaving many squeamish to the point of a stomach churn.

But experts have revealed the real reason people should refrain from squishing the creatures - and it results in humans being far better off.

In fact, if the eight-legged predators didn't gorge through 800 million tonnes of insects every year, the ecosystem would be overrun and people would be waist-deep in all kinds of pests.

As more than 90 per cent of spiders' diet is made up of insects, the hundreds of millions of tonnes of tiny vermin they consume play an essential role in keeping natural systems in check.

According to Associate Professor Dieter Hochuli from the University of Sydney, householders should have little cause for concern about the eight-legged creatures.

'While something like the huntsman is quite striking, and can strike quite a lot of fear into people - they're harmless,' he told Daily Mail Australia.
