Sheridan Smith's new film The More You Ignore Me struggles at the box office as it earns just £8420

She's the British star of stage and screen who won the nation's heart thanks to her incredibly versatile performances.

But Sheridan Smith's latest film has struggled at the box office upon its opening weekend after only being given a limited theatrical release, it was revealed on Wednesday.

Me - Jo - Brand - Keith - English

The More You Ignore Me, which is written by Jo Brand and directed by Keith English, only earned £8,420 after it was screened in 12 cinemas nationwide.

Sheridan, 37, takes on the role of Gina, mum to teenager Alice (Ella Hunt), who suffers from psychotic episodes and schizophrenia after developing postnatal depression following her daughter's birth.

Because of her mental health problems, Gina is prone to obsess over celebrities to the point of stalking them, and her eyes are particularly drawn to the local TV weatherman.

The More You Ignore Me sees her daughter develop a love for Morrissey after watching The Smiths perform on Top of the Pops.

Comedy - Jo - Brand - Novel - Name

The dark comedy, which is set in 1980s, is based on Jo Brand's 2009 novel of the same name and also star's the comedian as a former psychiatric nurse.

Sheridan is said to give an incredibly intense performance as the unhinged mum, taking on the role with all her might.

Film - Takings - Box - Office - Run

But, even though she did her best, there was little she could do to improve the film's takings at the box office after such a small run in cinemas.
