'Innocent bystander' dies after suffering head injuries when he got caught up in a fight

Detectives have launched a murder probe after a bar worker died following a vicious assault outside the pub where he worked.

Matthew Powney, 31, had been an 'innocent bystander' when a fight erupted outside the Wetherspoons pub just after midnight on Monday.

Father-of-one - Bus - Home - Shift - Violence

The father-of-one had been waiting to catch a bus home after his shift when violence flared in Willenhall, West Midlands, following last orders.

Police say he somehow ended up being attacked and suffered serious head injuries as the result of being assaulted outside The Malthouse pub.

Mr - Powney - Wolverhampton - Condition - Afternoon

Mr Powney, of Wolverhampton, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died in the afternoon.

West Midlands Police said a post mortem was due to take place on Tuesday and no arrests made yet been made.

Justin - Spanner - Force - Homicide - Team

Justin Spanner, from the force's Homicide Team, said: 'We understand there was a fight that ended with a bystander being attacked - and shockingly he passed away at hospital a matter of hours later alongside family members.

'At this time no arrests have been made, but our officers have worked through the night to secure CCTV, witness accounts and vital evidence from the scene.

A spokesman for Wetherspoons confirmed Mr Powney had worked at the pub for seven years and was 'highly regarded' by customers and staff.

He said: 'We are devastated by the death of Matt Powney.

'Matt worked for the company for more than seven years and was highly regarded and liked by both staff and customers at The Malthouse in Willenhall where he worked.

'We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.'
