It is a stunning new view of the moon - taken from a unique viewpoint.

Posted to Twitter by @Astro_Alex, European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst, this image shows our planet's Moon as seen from the International Space Station.

He posted the stunning image to illustrate just how far astronauts aboard the ISS travel as they orbit the Earth.

'By orbiting the Earth almost 16 times per day, the #ISS crew travel the distance to the Moon and back – every day,' he said.

The image is the latest in a series of stunning shots of the moon from space. The orbiting outpost has been sending back a stream of incredible images.

Gerst is also about tho begin testing an AI personal assistant.

CIMON - Crew - Interactive - MObile - CompanioN

Known as CIMON (Crew Interactive MObile CompanioN) the bot, developed by Airbus, will use IBM's Watson AI technology to help astronauts.

Researchers hope that with its face, voice and artificial intelligence, it will become a genuine 'colleague' on board, helping astronauts with their daily routines, and warning of any impending problems - much like the HAL robot in Stanley Kubrick's 2001 was designed to do.
