Cynthia Nixon called marijuana legalization a number one priority for the state of New York when she made an appearance at a pro-weed rally on Saturday.

The former Sex and the City star was met with cheers when she addressed a large crowd at the New York City Cannabis Parade.

'Arresting people for cannabis - particularly people of color - is the crown jewel for the racist war on drugs and we must pluck it down,' Nixon said at the event.

Nixon officially joined the gubernatorial race as a Democratic candidate in March, challenging incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo.

Marijuana - Pillar - Campaign - Justice - Issue

The 51-year-old has made marijuana legalization a main pillar in her campaign, calling it a social justice issue.

'If you are black or Latino, you are 10 times more likely to be arrested for cannabis than if you are white. And that's not right,' she said to the crowd on Saturday.

'It will follow you for the rest of your life, that arrest, and it will make it harder for you to get a job and it will make it harder for you to get a place to live.'
