This volcanic eruption in Papua, New Guinea based on the time that it takes for the shock wave to shake the camera on the boat, is about 2 miles away!  The shock wave creates a pressure wave moving through air, essentially just a really loud bang. It took a few seconds for the shock wave to reach the boat, which translates to about 2 miles away.  The pressure wave may not be enough to shake the camera on its own, but the loud bang could definitely startle the person taking the video.
