Supreme Court says Ginsburg home sick with stomach bug

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was missing from the bench for oral arguments Wednesday because she's at home suffering with a stomach bug.

The 86-year-old was absent when her colleagues took the bench just after 10am this morning.

Justice - John - Roberts - Part - Decision

Chief Justice John Roberts announced she was indisposed, but would still take part in the decision of the two cases being argued.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg confirmed it was a stomach bug that was keeping Ginsburg at home.

Ginsburg - Supreme - Court - Justice - Wing

Ginsburg, the oldest Supreme Court justice, leads the liberal wing of the court, which is currently controlled by conservatives 5-4.

She has been an active member of the bench this term, often leading the line of questioning.

Lawyer - Court - Yesterday - Cases - Term

The veteran lawyer was present in the court yesterday when one of the most important cases was heard this term, regarding President Donald Trump's decision to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Ginsburg spent the early part of her career as a professor at the Rutgers University law school in New Jersey and at Columbia University law school. She started the American Civil Liberties Union's Women's Rights Project in the 1970s.

Before the high court, she served as a federal appeals court judge in Washington DC for 13 years.

However, as a four-time cancer survivor her health has long been an concern.

Ginsburg has been treated for cancer twice in the past 10 months. Most recently in August, she announced the was being treated for pancreatic cancer.
