A man who joined the Marines two days after the September 11 attacks has been sentenced to a decade in prison.
Richard Laugel blamed post-traumatic stress disorder as the reason he put a bomb under his neighbor's car in 2016.

Laugel and his neighbor were reportedly in the middle of a parking dispute, although it has also been claimed that the neighbor was a rival drug dealer.
The bomb set off a fireball and explosion that was powerful enough to buckle the car's doors.

But the victim miraculously escaped injury, even though the bomb was detonated as he drove down a street in the Bronx.
Laugel was subsequently charged with attempted murder, arson, and criminal possession of a weapon.

US District Judge Paul Engelmayer said in court on Wednesday that he would have made Laugel spend twice as long in prison if not for his military heroism.
The judge cited a letter from Laugel's former platoon commander, which said that Laugel had provided security during the initial invasion of Iraq for former Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who was leading a Marine division at the time.
